The agency provides health services for all the homeless residents utilizing a medical doctor, nurse practitioner and a host or RNs and LPNs. Also, there is a Free Clinic every Saturday that is open to the entire community.
A second clinic was started at Scott in 2003. Staffed by Dr. Heather Dickson Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the health services target homeless men and women from our residential programs, the Drop-In Center and Rotating Shelter/Warming Center. Here, the emphasis is on medication compliance, as well as preventative measures like flu shots, proper nutrition and smoking cessation.
The Free Medical Clinic was started by Dr. Chuck Costea in 1981. Each week, 40-60 patients are seen in the clinic on Saturdays by Dr. Costea, his partner, Dr. Wetzel, and a dozen medical students from the Wayne State School of Medicine. For the elderly, working poor and homeless, the clinic serves as the place of their primary care.
